Google has agreed to destroy billions of data records in order to settle a lawsuit related to consumer privacy. The lawsuit alleged that Google secretly tracked the internet use of individuals who believed they were browsing privately. The settlement terms, filed in the Oakland, California federal court, require approval by U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers. Although users will not receive damages, they still have the option to sue individually for damages.
The class action, which began in 2020, covers millions of Google users who used private browsing since June 1, 2016. Users claimed that Google’s analytics, cookies, and apps allowed improper tracking of people who set Google’s Chrome browser to “Incognito” mode and other browsers to “private” browsing mode.
As part of the settlement, Google will update disclosures about its data collection practices during “private” browsing and allow Incognito users to block third-party cookies for five years.
This move aims to reduce the data collected from users’ private browsing sessions and decrease Google’s revenue from such data.
