Google Maps is undergoing some changes in India. According to a few news articles, Google Maps is getting an array of India-centric upgrades to transform directions through visual discovery, intuitive addresses, reduced emissions, and public transport. These AI powered features aim to create more immersive navigation aimed specifically for local mobility needs.
Some of the new features include –
Address Descriptors, it is a new feature on Google Maps that uses machine learning signals to display up to five relevant landmarks and area names around pinned addresses, and show landmark references when users share their location. It will be offered in over 75 cities across India. This feature is part of Google’s efforts to create more immersive navigation aimed specifically for local mobility needs.
Live View Walking Navigation, is a new feature on Google Maps that provides walking directions in the real world and on a mini map at the bottom of your screen. To use live view, you need to search for a destination you want to walk to, select walking mode of transportation, and tap the “Live view” button at the bottom-left of the page. Live view walking navigation provides arrows, directions, and distance markers on the Maps screen to help users navigate more easily. This feature is currently available only on Android and will roll out to over 3,000 cities and towns.
Lens in Maps, it provides relevant information about nearby restaurants, cafes, ATMs, transit stations, and other important points of interest. To use Lens in Maps, you need to open the phone’s camera via Google Maps and point it down a street or market. The Lens functionality will list nearby shops, restaurants, cafes, and other important points of interest. This feature is currently available in more than 50 cities, including Austin, Las Vegas, Rome, Sao Paulo, and Taipei.
