Recently a news has been surfacing all over the internet that an accident took place in the forest of Buxa Tiger Reserve in West Bengal on 27 November 2023 early in the morning around 7am, near Shikhari Gate between Rajabhatkhawa and Kalchini railway stations. There were two adults and one baby elephant who got hit by a parcel train leading to their deaths. And according to the government’s data on an average 20 elephants die every year in many such incidents in India.
For such prevention, The Indian railways has introduced a new AI based software technology named ‘Gajraj’ which aims to address the issue of elephant’s casualty resulting from train accidents. This software uses artificial intelligence and is designed to be installed along 700 kilometers of railway tracks in states such as West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand.
The Gajraj software will operate by employing sensors on the Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) line. These sensors are capable of detecting the vibrations caused by elephants’ footsteps from a distance of 200 meters. Once detected, the software activate an alarm to alert the train’s Loco Pilot. This advanced warning system allows the Loco Pilot to respond on time by slowing down the train’s speed, which will make sure the safety of both the elephants and passengers. So, by implementing the Gajraj software, Indian railways aims to proactively prevent accidents on railway tracks.
