Instagram announces teen accounts with parental control in India

In India, Instagram has introduced a new feature called Teen Accounts for users. This Accounts are designed to provide built-in protection specially for under 16, with the aim to create a safer and age-appropriate online experience, which allows them to manually approve who can follow them as these accounts are set to private by default. Non-followers won’t be able to view their content or send them messages, adding an extra layer of security.

One of the main features of teen accounts is the parental control option where Parents can now monitor their teen’s activity on Instagram, including who they interact with, what content they view, and how much time spend on the app, creating a safer and more controlled environment for young users while giving parents peace of mind. These safeguards are authorized by default which cannot be switched without parents’ consent. For teens over 16, supervision tools, are enabled for parents that allow them to set daily time limits, block the app during specific hours, and also monitor recent chats, giving parents more control over their teen’s social media usage and helping them ensure their child is spending time online responsibly.

For further protection, Instagram has introduced content controls for limited exposure to sensitive or inappropriate material, where users can explore their interest, connect with friends, and enjoy content tailored to their choice without worrying about unwanted interactivity or harmful content. Additionally, teens can only be tagged or mentioned by people they follow, and offensive language in comments or direct messages will be filtered out.

Instagram is also concerned about screen time and addiction, so teens receive a notification reminding them to take breaks after spending certain amount of time on app and a sleep mode feature that mute notification and sent auto-replies to DMs between 10pm to 7pm, encouraging healthier sleep habits.

There are also some potential downsides to consider for as teens, the strict controls might feel limiting, as they won’t have full autonomy over their accounts without parental consent.  Also, the default private setting might make it harder to connect to new friends or explore broader communities, which can be an important part of social media.
