The chief minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Nasscom Tech Leadership Forum in Mumbai on Monday said: the government of Maharashtra is in the process of crafting a focused policy on artificial intelligence (AI) and creating dedicated global capability centre (GCC) parks to permit tech innovation in the state.

With plans to create dedicated ecosystems in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Sambhajnagar, and Nashik, Global Capability Centers (GCCs) are actively being developed. “We are creating a GCC park in Navi Mumbai, which will host many GCCs. There are four or five which we are in active talks and mostly will close,” Fadnavis revealed.

Maharashtra has grown at a 10 per cent compound annual growth rate, over the last seven years, and if the growth continuous for the next four-five years, Maharashtra will be the first sub-nation to reach a trillion-dollar economy.  The government advisory council chaired by N Chandrasekaran has formulated a roadmap, in which the growth will be fueled by AI and innovation led by AI and technology will play a vital role in making Maharashtra a trillion-dollar economy, Fadnavis added.

A team of business leaders with expert in AI working is charting a new AI policy. The government want to embrace AI in all forms of life, so some departments within the state have started using AI in their daily operations, like an AI-led tool that reads large files, and summarises the contents on one page, helping in moving files faster,” he explained.

For the development of global capability centre (GCC) parks the government has earmarked a 300-acre piece of land in the city. He also urged the tech community to engage in the formation of the proposed Innovation City. N Chandrasekaran from Tata Sons volunteered to prepare an elaborate paper documenting the major planks of the Innovation City, and once it is ready, we will invite suggestions,” the Maharashtra chief minister said.

The state has sharpened its focus on making Maharashtra a GCC hub, as India becomes a preferred destination for global firms to set up their offshore capability centres. To support the growing data center infrastructure, some initiatives like ensuring a consistent power supply, and increase in power generation capacity from the current 45 gigawatts to 75 gigawatts by 2030, with 52 per cent coming from renewable sources. The government training of 10,000 women in AI has already started in partnership with Microsoft.
