November 19th Reuters Meta Platforms (META.O), which has launched a new tab, announced on 19th tuesday that it will file a legal challenge to a ruling made by India's competition body that limits data interchange between WhatsApp and its other apps.
On 18th monday, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) penalized the US tech giant $25.4 million for antitrust violations related to WhatsApp's 2021 privacy policy, and the messaging service was ordered to stop sharing user data for advertising purposes with other Meta-owned companies for five years.
In March 2024 of the same year, the CCI initiated an investigation into WhatsApp's 2021 privacy policies. The policy's permitting of data interchange between Meta and its components sparked a worldwide backlash.
"Sharing of user data collected on WhatsApp with other Meta companies... for purposes other than for providing WhatsApp service shall not be made a condition for users to access WhatsApp Service in India," said the CCI on Monday.A Meta official indicated on 19th tuesday that the 2021 upgrade had no effect on the privacy of people's private messages.
"We also ensured no one would have their accounts deleted or lose functionality of the WhatsApp service because of this update," according to a spokesperson.
