Open AI trying to breach privacy – Reported by Garante

The Italian data protection authority, known as Garante, has informed Open AI that its AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, violates the country’s data protection regulations. The regulator states that the techniques used by Open AI to collect users’ data through ChatGPT violate the country’s privacy law. This move comes after the watchdog briefly banned ChatGPT last year over alleged violations of EU privacy regulations. An inquiry by Italy’s Data Protection Authority (DPA) found data privacy violations, although it did not detail what the specific breaches were. Under the EU’s GDPR law, firms which break the rules can be fined up to 4% of the company’s global turnover.

Open AI has 30 days to respond with its defense. Italy is temporarily blocking the artificial intelligence software ChatGPT in the wake of a data breach as it investigates a possible violation of stringent European Union data protection rules, the government’s privacy watchdog said Friday.

The Italian Data Protection Authority said it was taking provisional action “until ChatGPT respects privacy,” including temporarily limiting the company from processing Italian users’ data.

OpenAI has close links with tech giant Microsoft, which has invested billions of dollars into the company. Microsoft has integrated AI into its Bing search engine, as well as its Office 365 apps such as Word, Teams and Outlook.
