Skype, video calling platform made headline in the early year, while Skype has officially gone to its grave. The company claims that more than 36 million people still log onto the service to interact with their friends, family and co-workers.
According to a blog post by Microsoft Skype is going into its grave on 5th of May 2025. The company has been slow rolling phasing out features of Skype. Last month, the tech giant cut sales of credits used to buy Skype numbers, which had allowed users to make calls to anyone anywhere.
Skype, which was first launched in 2003 has emerged as one of the most popular Voice-over-Internet-Protocol platforms of all time and Microsoft aquiring in 2011 for an astonishing 8.5 billion dollars. Thereafter, the tech giant redesigned Skype a couple of times to take on iMessage and tried integrating its functionalities with Windows and its own products like Windows.
After the acquisition, efforts were made by Microsoft to revive Skype, new features like Skype Clips were experimented on with Copilot AI integrated just last year. However, after the company failing to popularity the service during COVID-19, the platform has left it unattended. But they did use Skype to create Teams, their latest new service geared towards easing communication in the enterprise.
How to switch from Skype and Teams?
Microsoft states they will be providing ability for Skype users to sign into Teams in the near future. Skype accounts will be able to be used on any supported device for access into Teams (free).
Skype users signing into Teams account would automitacally have chats and contacts migrated.
Microsoft says Teams users talk to Skype users as well as Skype users are able to call and chat with Teams users. For people who are not ready to migrate with teams, Microsoft allows exporting all chats history, contacts and call history.
If palnning to switch to Teams, than install the app on the device and log in with your Skype credentials in order you will see all your contacts and chats in the app. For those who are wondering, Microsoft state that existing Skype subscribers will be able to access Skype Credits and Subscriptions until the next renewal period, while the Skype dial pad will remain available to paid users from the Skype web portal and within the Teams app.
