According to a recent announcement by WhatsApp and Google, the free unlimited Google Drive storage for WhatsApp backups will end soon. Starting from early 2024, WhatsApp backups will start counting towards your 15 GB free storage limit associated with your Google account, which is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. This means that users who rely on the free 15 GB quota will need to consider investing in additional storage.
It is interesting to note that Google has been taking steps to get people to pay for its services in recent years. For example Google Photos ended free unlimited photo and video backup in June 2021. It is unclear whether WhatsApp will introduce alternatives to Google Drive, like trying up with other cloud services or perhaps enabling backups on Meta’s servers.
